Obituary: Patrick O’Donnell, 78, of Milford

Patrick O’Donnell age 78, of Milford and beloved husband to Ruth Wiberg O’Donnell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25 2014 at Milford Hospital.

Born on February 1, 1936 in Milford, he was the son of the late Hugh and Elizabeth Lundy O’Donnell.

He served with pride and honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 34. Prior to his retirement in 1996, Patrick was a truck driver for Stop & Shop warehouse out of North Haven and was a member of Teamsters Local #443.

In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by his sons; Patrick O’Donnell and Eugene O’Donnell and his wife Claudine; grandchildren, Jaimee and Lily O’Donnell and Dylan Patrick O’Donnell; great grandchildren Elaija and Kiinan; his sisters, Joan Burke of FL and Nora Flynn of Milford and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Laura Lee O’Donnell, brothers, Thomas, John, Hugh, James, Frank, Bert and William O’Donnell and sisters, Theresa Farmer, Kathleen Ourfalian, Mary Jane Rogers and Sandra Volpe.

A Prayer Service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street Milford, CT 06460. Reverend Kenneth Fellenbaum is officiating. Interment will be private.

Obituary: Robert W. Shields, coach, mentor and educator for more than 30 years at Milford Public Schools

Robert W. Shields died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 27th at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Bob, the son of the late Joseph Shields and Alice Burke Shields, was born in New Haven on October 7th, 1935.

He leaves his wife of 54 years Anne, their son Todd and his wife Sharon and their children Lauren, Alexis and Chloe; their middle son Robbie and his children Mark and Marissa; and their youngest son Craig and his wife Maria and their children Morgan, Riley, Luke and Cameron. In addition, he is survived by his brother Bernard (Wendy) of East Haven and sister Maureen Leonardo (Ernest) and their children.

Upon bob’s discharge from the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Sergeant, he attended Southern Connecticut State University, obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He began his career at Yale University Law School Library, where he embraced a lifelong passion for Yale Football, attending games with his sons each season. He eventually moved on to a position in the Education Department at Southern, where he remained for nine years.

In 1974, he joined the faculty of the Milford Public Schools, impacting the lives of students across the district as a coach, mentor and educator for more than thirty years. His sense of fairness and integrity impacted the lives of the district teachers, as well, during his tenure as president of the teacher’s union, The Milford Education Association.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:30 at St. Mary Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford, CT 06460. Friends and family may call on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Committal will be private.

Daniel E. Perini

Daniel E. Perini, 26 years old, of Milford, CT passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2014 in Elizabethton, TN.

Daniel was born on September 10, 1988 in New Haven, CT, the son of Joanne Niemann Perini and Boris Perini and his fiancée Valarie DiMiero and her daughters Taylor and Caitlin.

In addition to his parents, Danny is survived by three brothers; twin brother Matthew, and younger brother Alex of Milford, Michael and his fiancée Maira and niece Anya of Ansonia. He is also survived by his grandmother Faustina Perini of Tennessee, Aunt Ester and Uncle Daryl Visser of Tennessee and Cousin Gina and husband Joey Karam and extended family of North Carolina and many loving aunts and uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal Grandmother Jeanette Sartini Niemann and paternal Grandfather Gino Perini.

Daniel grew up in Milford, CT and received his education in Milford Public School system and graduated from Platt Tech in 2007. Daniel worked at Boys & Girls Village as a Child Care Worker and he also worked as an auto collision tech for his Dad and R&C in Shelton. His most recent achievement was becoming an exceptional corrections officer at the NECX in Tennessee.

He was an outstanding student and employee and received many accommodations and praise for his performance integrity, commanding presence and tenacious personality. On his last day he was elected by his superior officers and peers to the Specialty Tact Team for the North East State Corrections Facility and never knew it. He was extremely respected by his peers, friends and family alike.

Daniel loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed hiking with his best dog buddies Bud and Mia. He also loved his truck, boating and hanging out with his brothers. Daniel had an outgoing personality and a great sense of humor. He could make you laugh even when you wanted to cry. He always had kind words and was always a genuine friend with a lending ear and open heart. His beautiful blue eyes will light his way to heaven! We love and miss you tremendously.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 6th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 70 Gulf Street, Milford, CT. Burial will follow at King’s Highway Cemetery, Milford, CT. Obituary: Albert Provenzano, 84, of Stratford

Albert Provenzano, age 84, beloved husband of Louise Macisco Provenzano of Stratford, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Bridgeport on November 11, 1929, he was a son of the late Saverio and Rosa Cicero Provenzano and was a longtime resident of Stratford.

Mr. Provenzano was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Albert was a strong believer in the American Dream and pursued it his whole life. At the age of 28, he and his wife opened the House of Spirits Liquor Store in Stratford, which they operated for over 40 years before retiring. He also believed in our political system serving for over 20 years at the local and state level. He was a State Representative for 10 years serving the 121st district in Stratford.

In addition to his wife Louise of 63 years, survivors include his three loving children, Marc Provenzano and his wife Ann Marie of Milford, Marten Provenzano and his wife Christina of Stratford, Marcel Provenzano of Stratford, a brother, Alfred Provenzano and his wife Aileen of Milford and five cherished grandchildren, Gina, Mariah, Angela, Julia and Giovanni as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Anthony Provenzano and a sister, Vincenzina Amorando.

Friends are invited to meet directly in Our Lady of Peace Church, 230 Park Blvd., Stratford on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Obituary: Joseph J. Merlotti, 91, of Stratford

Joseph J. Merlotti, age 91, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Hosey Merlotti, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, November 6, 2014.

Born in Forty Fort, PA on December 25, 1922, he was a son of the late John and Santana Columbo Merlotti.

He worked as a machinist for the former American Chain and Cable Co. of Bridgeport for many years before his retirement.

He loved to watch the dog races and work in his yard. His love for cooking, especially his famous spaghetti and cheese led to family get togethers each Thursday. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, he was proud to have seen them win the World Series.

Paramount in his life was his devotion to his family and their spending time together.

Survivors include his children, Ann Conroy and her husband David of Stratford, John Merlotti and his wife Sue of Shelton and Wilbur Deninger and his wife Judy of Milford, four grandchildren, Jason Burdo, Patrick Burdo III, Megan Merlotti and Louisa Tramontano, three great grandchildren, Elizabeth Deninger, Max Burdo and Jason Burdo Jr. He is also survived by a brother, Mario Merlotti and his wife Rita of Bridgeport and a special niece, Donna Toth of Shelton as well as several additional nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth, he is also pre-deceased by his daughters, JoAnn Deninger Tramontano and Sharon Merlotti, two sisters, Jenny Martinelli and Josephine Togna and a brother Chick Merlotti.

Lillian Marie McLeod

Lillian Marie McLeod, beloved mother and grandmother, died at Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody, MA on October 21, 2014. She was 97 years old.

Lillian was born in Bridgeport, CT on September 12, 1917, the daughter of David and Mary Clark.

She was the beloved sister of Irene Clark, Rita Lane and Veronica O’Brien, all of whom preceded her in death. Beloved mother of Maureen, Arthur and Elizabeth; mother-in-law of Thomas Conway, Ellen Winkler and Leonardo Brizuela Strauss; grandmother of Hannah and Sarah (Arthur and Ellen) and Isabel and Alessandra (Elizabeth and Leonardo); sister-in-law of Kenneth O’Brien and loving aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Lillian was raised in Brooklyn, NY and later moved to Milford CT after she married Arthur. They raised their three children in a loving home to which family and friends were always welcome.

She was employed for many years at Raybestos as a member of the accounting department. She later was an enthusiastic member of the staff at the Milford Senior Citizen’s Center, earning an outstanding staff leadership award in 1996. She retired in 2001, remaining at the Center as a full time volunteer.

In addition to her love of family and friends, she will be remembered most for her commitment to education and life-long learning. She especially loved to travel, journeying to South America, Europe and Asia and exploring the Western United States and Alaska. She loved to visit New York City, attending plays and museum exhibits with family and friends. Lillian moved to Massachusetts in 2003 where she enjoyed being close to her grandchildren.

She had many friends in Milford. Among those dearest to her were Irene Olson, Jackie Towle and Mary Baker, who frequently made the long journey to visit with her after she moved to Massachusetts.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Friends and family are invited to call on Saturday morning, November 15th from 10:00AM-12:00PM in The Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. A graveside service will be held at 12:15PM in Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford.

Susan Golas

Susan Golas, age 93, of Milford and formerly of Fairfield, beloved wife of the late Harry Golas, died on November 6, 2014.

Susan was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 18, 1921 to the late Oscar and Mary Huson Schorer.

Sue worked at the Westport Famous Artists School where over the course of several decades, she rose to manage nineteen employees, oversaw applications to the school, made sure talent tests were graded and sent salesmen to applicants’ doors to sign up for 24 correspondence art lessons. She cherished the memory she had of having lunch with Norman Rockwell and called it the most exciting hour of her career.

Sue was an avid bridge player, playing in the same bridge club for over 60 years. She served on the board of the Southport Women’s Club for many years and enjoyed to go on cruises.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Paradis (Robert) of Milford, step-daughter, Beverly Rega (Charles), step-son, Gary Golas (Robbyn), 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Sue is pre-deceased by her first husband, Robert Belknap and step-son, Robert Golas.

Friends and family may call on Monday night from 5:00PM-7:00PM in The Gregory F Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Tuesday at 10:00AM in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield.

Shirley J. Newton, of Milford and beloved wife to the late Donald F. Newton, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on November 5, 2014 at Milford Hospital.

Born in Bridgeport on March 27, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Harry J. and Helen Gannon Anderson.

Shirley and Donald lived in Fairfield until 1976 when they moved to Florida for 19 years. Shirley moved back to Connecticut in 1995, residing in Milford to be closer to her family and friends.

She recently attended her 70th Bassick HS reunion with her friends. Playing bingo and computer games in her spare time, her greatest joy was spending time with her family and Shirley will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children; Paul Newton and his wife Norma of IN, Brian Newton and his wife June of Shelton, Lynn Facenda and her husband Dennis of West Haven and Diane Mercaldi and her fiancé John Takacs of Milford; ten cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Brian, Ashley, Jill (Phil), Karyn, James (Corinne), Daniel, Rachel (Frank), Lauren (Christopher) and Brian; three great grandchildren, Grace, Sophie and Marshall; her sister, Barbara Bourque of Stratford and her brother Charles and his wife Mary Anderson of Oxford and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley was predeceased by her brother Warren Anderson, sister, Jeanne Bourque and brothers-in-law John and Daniel Bourque.

Jeannette Evelyn Palau Meaney

Jeannette Evelyn Palau Meaney, 89, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Edward F. Meaney (Duffy) for 47 years, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 surrounded by her family and caregivers at West River Healthcare after a long illness.

Mrs. Meaney was born in Milford, CT on June 25, 1925 to the late Charles and Gertrude Smithhenner Palau.

Jeannette (Babe Palau), graduated from Milford High School in 1943 and was described as “Snappy, clever, full of fun, she had a smile for everyone.” She was a long-time member of St. Ann’s and Christ the Redeemer’s Ladies Guild and served on numerous PTAs in town. She was known for her delicious pies and other delectable treats.

Jeannette was proud to be a “Walnut Beach Kid” with sand in her shoes. She was a loyal Boston Red Sox fan and an honorary Celtic woman.

Survivors include her children; Edward F. Meaney III (Sandi) of Guilford, Colleen Murray (Shawn) of Milford, her cherished eight grandchildren; Alyssa, Christopher, Keith, Stash, Erin, Austin, Beau and Shawn; seven great-grandchildren; Blake, Xzavier, Brock, Stashu, Lily, Hallie and Jordin.

Mrs. Meaney is predeceased be her son, Keith Charles Meaney, stepfather, Stanley Kannia and sister, Louise Dautrich.

The family would like to recognize and thank her caregivers at West River Healthcare and Seasons Hospice for their continuous love, care, and support for Mrs. Meaney. She will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Larry Steven Landsberg, age 66, of Milford, passed away suddenly and peacefully at home on Monday, November 3, 2014.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife Shaileen Kelly Landsberg, sons Michael and his wife Jamie, Jonathan and his wife Stephanie and grandchildren, Harrison, Olivia and Preston. Larry is also survived by his mother Julene, his brother Edward and wife Louann and their children, Jeffrey, Robert and Alicia. He also leaves behind step-son Coleman Hathaway and his fiancé Nicole Hopkins along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Arnold and his sister Andrea.

Born in Manchester, Larry graduated from Manchester HS, Class of 1966 and worked for many years as a respiratory therapist and in medical sales. He went on to follow his dream of becoming a chef.

Larry was well known in the Milford community as the Shoreline Chef, a personal chef who made many appearances on WTNH’s Connecticut Style TV show. Larry had a huge heart and a passion for helping others. As a proud member of the Milford Rotary Club, Larry was able to engage that passion in helping to run events to raise money to help those in need.

Since Larry’s favorite way to support people was through feeding them, he found a special calling to serve as a board member at the Beth-El Center. He knew the power of a hot meal would help heal the soul. He enjoyed music, fishing, boating, fine cigars and spending time with his beloved family.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 10th at 11:00 am at the Cody-White Funeral Home. Interment to follow at King’s Highway Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Sunday, November 9th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT 06460.

Obituary: John Anthony D’Auria, 96, of Milford

John Anthony D’Auria, age 96, longtime resident of Milford and beloved husband to the late Rose Chipello D’Auria, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Middelsex Hospital.

Born on March 20, 1918 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Dominico and Filomena DeStefano D’Auria.

He was a Second Officer in the Merchant Marines during World War II; on each of two missions his was torpedoed and sunk. As one of a few survivors, in July of 1992, he received a service medal from the Ambassador of the Russian Federation. After returning from the war, he became a supervisor at International Harvester and later Dyna Truck. Upon retirement, he was a custodian at Orchard Hills School in Milford. John also worked at both Bridgeport and Milford Jai Alai into his early eighties.

John and his wife Rose enjoyed numerous trips to Florida, Vermont, Las Vegas, and Italy; but their true joy was spending time with their loving family. John was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be truly missed by all who knew him.

John is survived by his two children, John J. D’Auria (Jaclyn) of Milford and Denise G. Odell (John) of Kensington; six grandchildren, Michael Cody, Robert Cody, and Kathryn Cody D’Auria, Jennifer Rose Broderick (Ryan), Stephanie Jo Bolstridge (James), and Matthew John Odell; and three great grandchildren, Lucas James, Timothy John, and Emily Rose.

In addition to his wife Rose, John was predeceased by his great granddaughter Allison Rose.

Family and friends will be departing the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford, CT at 9:45 AM for A Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 12th at Christ the Redeemer Church, 325 Oronoque Rd, Milford CT at 10:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Buckingham Ave, Milford with full military honors. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, November 11th, from 4-7 PM at Cody-White Funeral Home, Milford, CT.

John Hoydic, age 94, of Milford, beloved husband of the late Sophie Kudej Hoydic, died on Tuesday, November 4.

John was born in Erie, PA on November 26, 1919 to the late Stephen and Barbara Hoydic.

John proudly served his country in WWII in the US Army and later worked as a service advisor at Fruitrich Cadillac for many years. He lived in Trumbull, CT for over 50 years until moving to Milford eight years ago to be cared for by his loving son.

John loved to golf and was a wonderful bowler. His friends and family will never forget how John always made them smile with his witty one-liners.

Survivors include his children; James (Maria) Hoydic of Milford and Janis (Jack) Kvancz of VA, six grandchildren; Christel (Jenny) Hoydic, Amberlie Hoydic, Tiffany (Ken) Kopchak, Scott (Emily) Kvancz, Wendy (Robert) Reyburn, Courtney Kvancz, one sister, Beatrice Balakier of Stratford and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hoydic is predeceased by a brother, Stephen Hoydic and by four sisters; Midge Halky, Mary Bike, Irene Jergans and Helen Shevlin.

Paul Frank Gallo, of Stratford, beloved husband and father, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the young age of 58.

Paul was born on September 12, 1956 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to his parents Claudia and Carmen Gallo.

Paul met and married his one true love Debby Stankosky in 1981.

In addition to his beloved wife of 36 years, and mother, he is survived by his daughters, Kinder Gallo and her fiancé Andrew Freedman of Fairfield, and Alicia Gallo and her fiancé Jean Chery, and their son North of Monroe, his brother, Victor Gallo and his wife Bebe of Milford, mother-in-law Margaret Stankosky of Trumbull, favorite niece, Jessica Ann Barber and her husband Eric of Beacon Falls, and several other nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, MaryAnn Mure of Beacon Falls.

Paul worked as a dedicated truck driver at Sikorsky Aircraft Overhaul and Repair for twenty-five years. Paul would go to the ends of the earth for his children and wife, and acknowledged them as “my girls”. Paul also lovingly called his oldest daughter Alicia his “driving buddy”, and his youngest Kinder, “Daddy’s little girl”. His grandson North was fondly known to Paul as his “Little Man of Steel” and will forever fondly remember him as “Pop Pop”

Those blessed to know Paul, remember him for his good heart, and honest character. He had a knack for comforting people and a way with words when helping others with their problems. Paul enjoyed Harleys, singing, driving, making people laugh, and making toys for his grandson.

A celebration of Paul’s life will take place on Friday, November 7th from 6-10 pm at the Oronoque Village, North Trail Club House 600 North Trail Stratford.

Raymond Howard Berube of Kannapolis, N.C., passed on Thursday Oct. 30, 2014 at the Tucker Hospice House after a long illness.

He grew up in Milford Ct. and graduated proudly from Milford High School.

A Military Graveside Service for Raymond was held at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC on Thursday Nov. 6th at 2:00 PM. Military honors were provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Dr. Anthony J. Russo, DDS, of Orange, CT passed away on November 8, 2014.

He was born on August 25, 1924 in New York City. The son of the late Annunziata (Manfre) and Frank Russo of High View, NY and beloved husband of the late Emily Leone Russo, and father of Jane Russo, DMD, Walter Russo, DMD, both of Milford, CT, Peter Russo, DMD, Guilford, CT and Martha Russo, MFA, Ward, CO; loving father-in-law to Erica Russo, Walt’s wife, and Professor Joseph Ryan, PhD, Martha’s husband; loving grandfather to Odelia and Henry Ryan, Claire, Amelia, and Holly Russo, Peter and Laura Kurjanowicz. He was pre-deceased by his grandson Kyle Kurjanowicz and his sister Sarah Cromwell.

Dr. Russo served in World War II, landing at Omaha Beach with the 294th Combat Engineer attached to the 82nd Airborne. He was honored with a Bronze Star for bravery. After returning from the war, he attended Bucknell University and then the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 1952. In 1953, he interned at the Philadelphia Hospital where he met Emily Leone, to whom he was married for 60 years. He opened his dental practice in Milford in 1954, and practiced for 40 years.

Always a man of generosity, he threw a party in the office grounds for all of his patients to honor his 35th year in practice. He retired in 1993; his dental legacy continues today under Dr. Walter Russo. He was a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and former President of the Milford Dental Society. Active in the community he loved, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Milford, serving as President in 1960, and after 58 years of service, was recently honored with the Walter Zeller Fellowship Award. He was also past President of the American Friends, a member of both the American Red Cross and the United Way Fund, and co-founder of the Milford Youth Center.

He received the Devon Post Veterans’ of Foreign War Award for “Outstanding Service to Youth,” and the Milford Junior Chamber of Commerce honored him with the “Distinguished Service Award.” In 2001, he received both the “Italian American of the Year Award” from the Milford Columbus Committee, and the “International Hixson Award” from the Kiwanis Club of Milford. Dr. Russo was the general chairman of the election committee for Charles R. Iovino who became Mayor of Milford on a write-in vote in 1959. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ for 60 years and served on the music committee for the Plymouth Men’s Club.

An avid fisherman and boat enthusiast, Dr. Russo caught big game fish from here to Mexico and traveled extensively around the world with his family.

Calling hours are on Saturday, November 15, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 N. Broad St. Milford. The memorial service is on Sunday, November 16 at 1:00 pm, First United Church of Christ, 34 West Main Street, Milford. Additional parking is available at Wasson Field at 91 West Main Street, Milford.

James P. Horan

James P. Horan, age 89, of Milford, beloved husband of Elly Lutzenberger Horan, died on Monday, November 10, 2014.

James was born on June 27, 1925 in County Mayo, Ballintubber, Ireland to the late Dennis and Nell Kennedy Horan.

He worked as a conductor for the Railroad for over 30 years.  James was an active parishioner of Saint Ann Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He always enjoyed gardening and feeding his birds.

Survivors include his daughter, Elfriede Williams and her husband Ronald of Milford and two nephews of Ireland.

James is predeceased by his four brothers; Pierce, Brendan, Thomas Joe, and Dennis Kevin Horan.

Friends and family may call on Thursday night from 6:00PM-8:00PM in The Gregory F Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:00AM DIRECTLY in Saint Ann Church, 501 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford.  Interment will follow in Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford.

Ruth A. Phillips, age 71, of New Haven and formerly of Milford and beloved partner to Lorraine Sullivan, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Yale New Haven Hospital, Smilow Center.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 3, 1943, she was the daughter of Pauline DeLucca Phillips and the late William Phillips.

Raised in Milford, she was employed in medical records at Midstate Hospital in Middletown. Ruth was an avid reader, enjoyed going to the movies, especially mysteries, and was a dog lover.

Known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, Ruth will be remembered for her generosity, love and caring spirit by all who were blessed to know her.

In addition to her partner, Lorraine, and mother, Pauline, she is survived by her siblings; Linda LaMer (Jack), William Phillips (Susan) and Thomas Phillips (Caroline) all of Milford and her cherished nieces and nephews; Scott(Alicia), Emily, Stacey (Rob), Debi, Chisine (Anthony), Jackie, Jenny (Dan), Will and Michael and her dog and companion, Reggie.

In addition to her father, Ruth was predeceased by her nephew, Ryan Phillips.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 14th (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH) at 10:30 am at Christ the Redeemer Church, 325 Oronoque Rd., Milford, CT. 06460. Eugene J. McHugh, age 81, of Milford, Ct. passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2014 in Bridgeport Hospital.

Born on May 10, 1933, in Peckville, Pa., “Gene” was the son of the late Anthony and Evelyn Gaughan- McHugh.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Florence Verrrilli McHugh, devoted daughters Jeanne McHugh-Broughton of West Haven, Eileen (David) McHugh-Silva, of Brooklyn, NY and Barbara( Michael) Ceneri of Orange. He is additionally survived by a loving sister, Margaret McHugh, of Milford. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Katherine and Emma Silva of Brooklyn, NY and Nicholas Ceneri of Orange, Ct. He leaves behind many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his three brothers: Joseph, Donald and John McHugh as well as his son in law Bruce Broughton.

Gene was employed by Textron/Lycoming for 35 years in the engineering/metrology department. He was a graduate of Olyphant High School and Lackawanna Business School in Scranton, Pa.

He enjoyed life to the fullest and was very active in many groups throughout his life, including the Milford Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing pool, singing in the choir and socializing. He was an active parishioner at Christ the Redeemer Church and served as an usher there for many years.

He will always be remembered for being a compassionate gentleman and caring friend to all who knew him. Above all, Gene was a devoted brother, husband, father and grandfather, putting his family at the core of everything he did in life. He will be dearly missed by all who were privileged to know and to love him.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 4-8 at the Smith and Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 N Broad St. Milford, CT. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 am in Christ the Redeemer Church, Rutland Rd., Milford, CT. Interment will be private.

Barbara Ann Deveau, 82, of Milford, CT, beloved wife of the late J. Lawrence (Larry) Deveau, entered into eternal rest on November 14, 2014.

Born on May 8, 1932 in Norwich, CT, she was the daughter of the late Irving and Clarissa Rankin.

She was a graduate of St. Josephs College in West Hartford, CT and was a registered nurse. She married Larry in 1954 and started their life together in Willimantic, CT.

Over the course of the next 30 years, she and her family moved throughout the northeast including Oxford, MA, Dudley, MA, Burlington, VT, Framingham, MA, North Stonington, CT, Succasunna, NJ, and finally Milford, CT where she resided for the past 30 years.

She raised seven children and was an avid supporter of her children and grandchildren’s activities, especially sports. She was an enthusiastic supporter of UCONN Women’s basketball. She also enjoyed spending many winters in Myrtle Beach, SC.

She is survived by her sister Joyce (Donald) Anderson, daughters Janine (David) Benn, Catherine (Robert) Rodman, and sons James (Laurie), David (Wendy), and Steven (Jennifer), 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by her brother John Houghton, daughter Marie and son Paul.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on November 19th at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milford, CT. Friends and family may call from 6:00 – 9:00 PM on November 18th at Cody-White Funeral Home 107 Broad Street Milford, CT 06460.

Laura Mitchell, age 56, a lifelong resident of Milford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones and in the presence of God on Saturday, November 15, 2014 following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Laura was born to the late Stephen and Sandra Nold in Milford Hospital. Laura was the devoted wife and best friend of Richard Mitchell for 39 years.

Laura leaves behind a daughter, Amy Fedigan and her husband Brendan (Milford) their four children, Liam, Tierney, Seamus, and Norah who gave her such strength. She also leaves a son Richard Mitchell and his wife Eleni of Ridgefield.

Laura leaves behind a brother Walter, a sister Stephanie, and the brothers and sisters of her husband- Marilyn, William, Alison, Rodney, and her father-in-law Lawrence.

She is predeceased by her mother-in-law Edna. She cherished her many nieces and nephews, lifelong friends and those that came to mean so much to her throughout her life.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center that became so much more than health-care professionals but true friends to both Laura and her family.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday November 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Saint Gabriel Church 26 Broadway, Milford, CT 06460.
