Obituary: Nettie Frances Phillips, 89, of Milford

Milford-OBT-NettiePhilipsNettie Frances Phillips, 89 of Milford, beloved wife of the late Alfred Phillips, passed away on November 5, 2013 at Yale New Haven Hospital.

She was born on April 17,1924 in Bridgeport to the late Richard James and Elsie Dayton Rosenbaum.

Mrs. Phillips was an assembler for Robert Controls of Milford for 34 years.

Nettie was a former member of the Mary Taylor Church Choir for 45 years, Eastern Star Lucia Chapter #25, Milford Senior Center and Charter Member of Robert Shaw Quarter Century Club.

She is survived by her step-children James (Debra) Phillips of Clinton, Nancy (Robert) Dapp and Catherine (Christopher) Daniels both of Lynchburg, VA., and Helen F. Peterson of Alabama, brothers Richard and Ronald Rosenbaum, sister Linda Brown, 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother Robert B. Rosenbaum and sisters Lilah Hinklein and Elsie Haisch.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday November 13, 2013 at 11:00 am directly in Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, Milford. Interment will follow in Kings Highway Cemetery Milford. The arrangements are in the care of the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St. Milford.

Alexander Szabados, Sr., age 71, of Milford, passed away in his home on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.

He was born on November 20, 1941 in Novajidran, Hungary to the late Sandor and Borbala Vilmanyi Szabados.

Before retiring, he was employed as a tool machinist for Hiem Universal.

An active and loved member of the community, he was a member of the Hungarian Club in Wallingford, a former Milford Soccer and Baseball coach and enjoyed league bowling. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, he will be sadly missed.

Mr. Szabados is survived by his devoted wife Gabriella Barabas Szabados, son Alexander Szabados Jr. of North Carolina, daughter Erika Fowler of New Hampshire, sisters Olga Szilagyi and Sarolta Baranyi and grandchildren Angelica Marie Valletta, Tasha D. Fowler, Aleaha N. Fowler, Samantha Evans, Bryson Noah Szabados and he was looking forward to his first great grandchild.

Calling hours are Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 5 to 7pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. A prayer service will be held during the calling hours at 6:30pm. Interment will be private.

Obituary: Verne Herrick Lucas, 84, of Oxford

Milford-OBT-Verne-LucasMrs. Verne Herrick Lucas, age 84, of Oxford, beloved wife of the late Edward Lucas, entered into peaceful rest on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 at Birmingham Health Center, Derby.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1928 in New York State and was the daughter of the late Harold Herrick, Sr. and Marion Wheelon Herrick.

Before she had children, she was the secretary to the Principal at Center School in Oxford. She originally lived on Freeman Road in Oxford for many years. Later she moved to Maplewood Ave. in Milford. Recently, she was a resident at Brighten Gardens, Woodbridge and then lived at the former Hilltop Health Center in Ansonia.

Verne was an avid gardener who loved to grow vegetables and especially lots of flowers. She had a True Green Thumb. She was one not to forget your name or birthday, and treated you with love.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by her devoted son, John Lucas and his wife, Diane and her devoted daughter, Marion Gray and her husband Roland all of Oxford, her brother, Harold Herrick, Jr. and his wife Minka of Kerrville, TX, and grandchildren, Ronald Tichy, Jr., Jennifer Culver and JoAnna Lucas and great grandchildren, Scarlett Tichy, Auriana Lucas, Dominic Holloway and Hannah Culver.

Her sister, Gene Sellers of Fort Lauderdale, FL predeceased her.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, Nov 11 at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Community Church, Oxford. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 5:30 p.m. at the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour.

Memorial Contributions towards the new steeple fund may be made to the Riverside Community Church, 238 Freeman Road, Oxford, CT 06478.

Obituary: Richard F. Young, 51, formerly of Milford

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Richard F. Young, age 51. He passed away in his sleep on November 4th. He was the loving son of Peggie Young of Milford and the late Dick Young.

Richard grew up on Milford and Monroe and was a 1980 graduate of Masuk High School where he played football and ice hockey.

He was a lifelong fitness enthusiast and weight-lifter. For years he had his own painting business and most recently returned to school.

He was a devoted son who became his father’s primary care-giver in his final years, and was a great support to his mother. His love of his dogs is legendary.

Survivors include his sisters Cynthia McCurdy and Leslie Esposito, his brothers-in-law, Hank McCurdy and Frank Esposito; his niece and nephews Katie, John and Harrison McCurdy and Richard Vega; as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 16th at 2:00 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Monroe, CT.

Theophila “Katie” Lopezzo, 82, of Monroe, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at her home with all of her loving family at her side.

She was born Theophila M. Sikorski in Chelsea, MA on April 18, 1931.

She has been the beloved wife of Frank P. Lopezzo for the past 62 years.

She devoted her life to her husband and children. She spent the last 35 years traveling to many locations around the world. She so enjoyed making weekly trips to the casino where she had made many longtime friends.

Her hobby was learning how to greet friends, acquaintances, and perfect strangers in many different languages. She loved all animals, with the cardinal being her favorite bird. She was a great cook and loved hosting large family gatherings in her home.

She is survived by her husband Frank, sons Thomas and his wife Lorraine of Baltimore, MD, Paul and his wife Cheryl of Prospect, CT, daughters Nina Arribas and husband Robert of Monroe, CT, Lisa Michel and husband Robert of Monroe CT, and Gina Lapke of Milford, CT. And also, cherished grandchildren James, Nicholas, Christine, Laura, Kim, April, Rachael, Nicole, Mark , and Joseph, and great grandchildren Tayah, Mathew, and Maximus. She is also survived by her loving sister Sophie of Saugus, MA.

She was pre-deceased by a brother and two sisters.

Viewing on Thursday, November 14th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, with a Funeral Service at 7:00 pm.

The family wishes to thank the staff of 7 West at St. Vincent Medical Center for their compassion, understanding and wonderful care.

Gerald was born in Bridgeport November 10, 1941, son of the late Stanley and Wanda Weiner Silver.

He was a retired engineer for Avco Lycoming.

Gerald was a member of Milford Elks Lodge #1589 and enjoyed golf, clamming, cooking and vacations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Jay (Seton) Silver of Brookfield, Tim (Melissa) Silver of Milford, Amy (Stephen) Mikulski of Tolland and Mark Silver of Milford, honorary daughter Nicole (Jimmy) Wilhelm of Milford and two brother in laws, Jim (Teri) Amann and Paul (Kathy) Amann both of Milford, eight cherished grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Stanley.

Calling hours will be held Monday November 18thfrom 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 N. Broad St., Milford . Prayer service will be held during the visitation at 7:30 pm. Interment will be private.

Betty Jean Zynko, 73, of Milford, beloved wife of Edward J. Zynko for 53 years, entered into eternal rest on Friday November 15.

Betty was born in Bridgeport, CT on April 22, 1940 to the late John and Anna Demek Vasko.

She dedicated her life to her God and her children.

Survivors include her children: Dawn (James) Serreti of Stratford, Edward E. (Evelyn) Zynko of New Haven, Peter Zynko of Milford, Samantha Zynko of NY, her many loved foster children, her sister; Mary Gombar, son-in-law; Gregory Chvirko, eight cherished grandchildren; RJ, Rachael, Christopher, Andrea, Joshua, Michael, Olivia, and Evangeline and several nieces and nephews.

Betty is predeceased by her daughter, Irene Chvirko and two sisters; Helen Grunik and Ann Muller.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 5:00-8:00PM in The Gregory F Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30AM DIRECTLY in Saint James Church, Stratford. Interment will follow in Kings Highway Cemetery, Milford.

John P. Ferrando, 91, of Stratford, the beloved husband of the late Mary T. Stanzione Ferrando, passed away peacefully on November 17th in his residence.

John was born on July 14, 1922 in Bridgeport. He was the son of the late Paul and Evalina Ferrando.

John was a graduate of Warren Harding High School. He was a proud World War II Navy Veteran, a member of the VFW Post 9460 Stratford and the Catholic War Veterans. He was in the restaurant business for over 40 years. He was the former owner of Ferrando’s Palace and the Station House Square Restaurant.

He was an avid sports fan who excelled in baseball and was a world record holder in duckpin bowling. He sponsored numerous athletic teams and was inducted into the Stratford Old Timer’s Hall of Fame and the Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his beloved daughters Evelyn Mulvihill and her husband John, Edna Lynn Press and her husband Bryan, all of Trumbull, and Lisa English and her husband Tom of Milford, 7 cherished grandchildren Michael Press and his wife Rebecca, Kevin Mulvihill, Jeffrey Press and his wife Julie, Catherine Mulvihill, Steven Press, Zachary and Alexanne English, 2 great-grandchildren Madelyn and Mia Press.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents he was pre-deceased by his sister, Pauline Dayton and brother, Charles Ferrando.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 20th at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Entombment with full military honors will be in St. Michael’s Chapel Mausoleum. At the family’s request calling hours have been omitted. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, CT.

Milford-OBT-CHICKOSEdward C. Chickos, age 83, of Milford, beloved husband of Johanna Mankowski Chickos, died on Tuesday, November 19th with his family at his side.

Mr. Chickos was born in Milford on December 16, 1929 to the late Andrew and Marion Harris Chickos.

He was a lifelong resident of Milford and was the owner and founder of Edward Chickos & Sons Oil Company.

He loved boating and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his children; Edward Chickos Jr. and his wife Sharon, Michael Chickos and his wife Lisa, both of Milford, five grandchildren; Matthew, Ryan, Michelle, Scott and Katherine, two great-grandchildren; Nicholas and Scarlett, his sister; Ginny Smith of Milford and several nieces and nephews.

Edward is predeceased by his first wife, Marcia S. Chickos and his brothers, Albert and Bob Chickos. Services will be private.

Obituary: Florence H. Colby, 99, a longtime Milford resident

Florence H. Colby, 99, a longtime Milford resident, wife of the late William E. Colby, died November 18, 2013.

Daughter of the late Minnie and Eugene Hoornbeck, she was born June 3, 1914 in Pasadena, California.

Mrs. Colby earned her bachelor’s degree at SUNY Albany in 1936; she later completed a master’s degree at University of Bridgeport. Her long career in secondary education included teaching math and serving as guidance counselor at Milford High School and Foran High School, retiring from the latter in 1985.

Mrs. Colby and her husband were avid travelers, exploring Europe, Asia and Africa. She was a keen gardener and the devoted owner, trainer and friend to a long succession of Sheltie dogs. She worked as a volunteer in Milford Hospital’s gift shop for several years.

She was predeceased by her husband and her one sibling, sister Theodora Farrell.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service is planned.

Angela Raia Richards, age 82, of Milford, formerly of New York City, loving wife of the late William Richards, passed away Wednesday November 20, 2013.

She was a devoted wife and mother who especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Angie is survived by her daughters Rosann (Daniel Bissonnette) Vinci, Becky (Robert) Tremblay and Virginia (Mark) Krumwiede all of Milford and her son Frank (Arlene) Raia of Nevada, sisters Virginia Pesce and Anna Tortorici, both of New York, her brother-in-law Al Richards and sister-in-law Connie Richards of Rowayton, numerous grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday November 29, 2013 at 10:00 am in St. Peter’s Church, 71 River St. Milford with the Rev. Cynthia Knapp officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Obituary: Albin Vitas Wickun, 96, former Alderman of Milford

Albin Vitas Wickun, former Alderman of Milford, died in Boca Raton, Fl. on November 15, 2013 at the age of 96.

Born and educated in Bridgeport, CT, he resided in Milford over 25 years before moving to Pompano, FL.

In 2008 he returned to Milford to receive his 50th year membership pin from Ansantawae Lodge 89 where he was Master in 1970. During this visit Mayor James Richetelli honored him by declaring April 4, 2008 as Albin V. Wickun Day for his service to the city.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette Wickun.

He leaves behind his three daughters, Claudia Kavan, (Stan) of Fernandina Beach, FL., Danette Needham, Pompano Beach, FL., and Vinnie Gordon, (Gary) of Boca Raton, FL., nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held January 5, 2014 in Boca Raton.

Milford-OBT-DICKINSONDaniel “Beasty” Dickinson, age 57, of Milford, beloved husband of the late Marion Dickinson, died on Saturday, November 23.

Danny was born in Bridgeport, CT on February 21, 1956 to the late Kenneth and Catherine Bensak Dickinson.

He worked as an auto mechanic for Napoli Motors for over 35 years until retiring 3 years ago.

Danny enjoyed to watch Nascar and football and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus in Milford. He loved his family and friends and was the happiest when he was spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his children: Kenneth and Kyle Dickinson, both of Milford, grandchildren; Avery and Morgan Dickinson, siblings; Andrew DePalmer of Milford and Julianna (Steve) Scerba of Oxford, several nieces and nephews and his grand dog, Dutchie.

Danny is predeceased by his brother, Anthony DePalmer, sister, Christine Singer and step-father, Anthony DePalmer Sr.

Friends are invited to attend A Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 9:30 AM DIRECTLY in St. Ann Church. Interment will follow in St Mary Cemetery, Milford. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM in the Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford.

Jeannette (Jean) R. Pelletier, age 82, of Milford for over 50 years, beloved wife of the late Philip D. Pelletier, died on Friday, November 22.

Jeannette was born in Limestone, ME on October 26, 1931 to the late Elisee and Doria Theriault.

Survivors include her daughters: Patricia (Timothy) Matlyak of Sandy Hook, CT, Pamela Peate of Milford, Theresa (Roland) Skinner of Orange, three grandchildren; Michelle, Brian and Jennifer Skinner, brothers; Camille, Maurice and Paul Theriault, sisters; Laurencia Kavanaugh, Yvonette St. Peter, Pricille Juliano, and Christine Olson and several nieces and nephews.

Jeannette is predeceased by five siblings.

Obituary: Anthony Dominic Mastroni, 70, of Milford

Anthony Dominic Mastroni, age 70, of Milford, CT entered into eternal peace on November 25, 2013.

He was born in Bridgeport on August 8, 1943, raised in Trumbull and was a Milford resident for 44 years.

Following High School, Tony served in the U.S. Navy for four years and earned his license as an electrician. He was employed by Pitney Bowes and worked at their World Headquarters in Stamford, CT until his retirement in 1998.

After his retirement he volunteered his services to the building of Amistad – The Replica Ship. Tony was a long time Boy Scout leader of Troop 71 and received the District Award of Merit, Presidential Recognition, Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a lifetime member of the Pequonnock Yacht Club in Bridgeport.

Tony is predeceased by his father, Dominic Mastroni, mother, Esther (Ferrusi) Mastroni, brother-in-law Charles Hanish and sister, Mary Lou Hanish.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Dolores (Oliver) Mastroni, daughter, Debra Mastroni-Kenyon and her husband, Wayne Kenyon, son, Dominic Mastroni and granddaughter, Stefany Mitchell whom he adored and cherished most of all. He also leaves two sisters, Carmelita Kelly (Daniel) of Summerfield, FL and Judith Plourde (Gary) of Sinking Springs, PA as well as several nieces and nephews.

Tony struggled the last few years of his life with failing health and trying to come to terms with that. He is now resting. He is now at peace.

Friends and family may call on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 N. Broad Street, Milford from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013, directly in the Woodmont United Church of Christ, 1000 New Haven Avenue, Milford at 9:30 AM. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Stratford, followed by a reception at Gusto’s Trattoria, 255 Boston Post Road, Milford.

Roger O. Sicotte, age 92, of Milford, beloved husband of Eleanor Chervenak Sicotte for 71 years, died on November 29, 2013.

Roger was born in Chataguy, Montreal on September 28, 1921 to the late Joseph and Goldie Tompkins Sicotte.

He served our county in WWII and was proud US Army veteran. He served in the China Burma India Theatre for two years and was the corporal of engineers. Upon his return from the War, Mr. Sicotte was a volunteer fireman for 12 years. He worked as a bus driver for CR&L for 25 years and later was self-employed in Home Improvement.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Eleanor, children; Roger R. Sicotte (Beatrice) of Milford and Linda Tomlin of Milford, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, a brother, Arthur Sicotte of Alabama and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sicotte is predeceased by one brother and five sisters.

Grace M. Magee, 94, of Milford, beloved wife of the late John Edward Magee, died on Saturday, November 30th.

Grace was born in Albany, NY on July 22, 1919 to the late Charles and Susan Stevens Bennett.

She worked as a glass blower during the war and later was a baby nurse in a pediatrician’s office. She completed her career as a recreation therapist.

Grace was a longtime parishioner of Saint Gabriel Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister. Grace also was a founding member of the Peace of Christ Prayer Ministry in Yonkers, NY. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters Laurelton Chapter and the Rosary Society.

She was an avid baker, making wedding cakes for many of her children.

Survivors include her children, John A. Magee (Linda), Edward ‘Ned’ G. Magee, Maryellen Matthew C. Magee of Walton, NY, dear nephew and niece, Robert Crimmins and Fioneula Herity, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Grace is predeceased by her daughter, Angela Magee, grandson, Matt Edgar, two sisters, one brother and nephew, Brendan Herity.

Friends and Family may call on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 5:00PM-8:00PM in The Gregory F Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 6, at 10:00AM in St Gabriel Church, 26 Broadway, Milford. Interment will follow in Putney Cemetery, Stratford.

Mrs. Blundo was born in Bridgeport, CT on February 3, 1927 to the late Edward and Antoinette Puglia Palumbo.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to read and paint.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Toohey (Thomas) of Milford, two grandchildren; Kyle and Brendan Toohey both of Milford, brother-in-law, Harold Riccio of Milford, nieces and nephews; Debbie (Peter) Lumley, Dennis (Bettie) Torreso, and Kristine Torreso.

Mrs. Blundo is predeceased by her sisters; Ida Verrilli, Louise Torreso, Rose Fritz, Maria Riccio and Theresa Santini.

Friends are invited to attend A Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 11:00 AM DIRECTLY in St. Ann Church, 501 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford. Interment will follow in St Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Thursday morning from 8:30AM – 10:30AM in the Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford.

Darrick Damian Sommers, 36, of Milford, passed away suddenly at Milford Hospital on November 30th 2013.

Beloved son of Charles E. and Barbara Karwasky Sommers. He was born on August 14, 1977 in New Britian, CT.

Darrick was a self-employed management consultant. He was a graduate of Fairfield Prep and Saint Anselm College.

In addition to his loving parents, he is survived by his aunt Diane Lucke, aunt and uncle James and Karen Stone, godmother Elaine Tatem and her husband Bob, godfather Albert Jekelis and his wife Joy, several cousins, great aunts, great uncles and dear friends.

Calling hours are Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St. , Milford . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday 10:30 am at St. Mary Church, Milford. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

Susan Peterson, age 58, of South Carolina and formerly of Milford, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 26th.

Susan was born in Milford on December 1, 1954 to Lucile (Connie) Peterson and the late Ken Peterson.

Survivors in addition to her mother Connie Rogers include her son, Stephen Ross; three grandchildren, Amber, Tabitha and Kyle Ross; sister, Marie Youngblood Krebs, and brothers, Guy Youongblood, Michael Peterson, and M.C. Henderson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
